First of all, let’s look at what a traditional round of poker may look like. Interestingly enough, for someone new, poker variants may seem so different. In Omaha, you hold four cards, in limit games you only can bet the amount of the pot while 5-card Draw may seem like a game from a completely different universe.

But it’s not the case. Really. When you look at these games closely, you will notice that they have many things that are similar – the hole cards, the community cards, both followed by the rounds of betting.

Let’s take No Limit Holdem Poker as an example and see how someone would deal cards in this game.

Poker Rules: How To Deal Cards in No Limit Hold’em Poker Game

There are a couple of basic terms you have to understand to properly deal cards in a no limit poker game. First is position. That means that no matter the variant of the game, the action always starts from the person holding the dealer button and goes clockwise.

Second is hole cars (your own cards) and third – community cars that are the same to all players in the round.

As we have established already, you start from the player holding the dealer button and you deal two cards for each of the players at the table.

As the players make the choice to play in the round (call or raise), you collect their bets. When the players choose not to play in the particular round of play, you collect their cards in a discard pile, called the muck.

When the bet of the raiser are evened out in the round by the callers, you deal the community cards.

The Flop

In a no limit hold’em poker game, you deal three community cards face-up. This is called the flop. These cards allow the players to make assumptions of how strong their hand is and how their hands’ strength might change in the following rounds.

Again, if there is a player who chooses to raise, his bet must be matched by other players who wish to continue. Players who decide to fold pass their hole cards to the dealer who mucks their hands.

The Turn

The action continues in a same fashion as it did on the flop. However, on the Turn the dealer deals only one card face-up.

Following the action of the dealer, players make a choice to check, raise and call depending on the action that happened before them. The dealer collects cards from the players that choose to fold.

The River

This is the last street where dealer deals community cards that players can use to make their strongest hand of the round. The dealer deals one more card face-up and once again starts the action from the player who has the dealer button or a player that is closest to him clockwise.

The round of betting pursues. If there are two or more players that choose to call the raiser’s bet or if all of the players in the round decide to check, the players have to show their cars starting from the one who started the last aggressive action i.e. raised.
